Tips to beat burnout

Burnout comes in all shapes and sizes. And you know what else? It doesn’t discriminate! Whether you love your job, are a student, have been at the same job for ten years, whatever it is, you always need to be mindful of burnout. And especially this year, burnout is very prevalent. I read recently that women are more prone to burnout than men, which is why I wanted to give some practical tips to beat burnout. I know it can feel like a long road to overcoming it if you’re feeling it, but I promise it won’t be like this forever! Here are my tips to beat burnout:

Communicate how you’re feeling

Maybe this is with your partner, coworker, or best friend, but let someone know how you’re really feeling. Burnout is real and it’s hard!! However, when you openly share your feelings and struggles, you allow someone else to not only give advice, but also potentially lighten your load.

Ask for help

Now is not the time to be too shy to ask for help. If someone offers to help you with something, take them up on their offer. If no one offers, speak up and ask! People want to help. Sometimes they just need to be told.

Take breaks

If you have PTO, I suggest using a day to plan whatever you want and need! Maybe this means no plans at all. Perhaps it means a day full of your favorite things. Don’t be afraid to take a day off for your mental health - you’re worth it!

Practice gratitude

I’m not trying to be all woo-woo here, but having a mindset of gratitude truly makes a huge difference!! When I think about everything I have to be grateful for and work (notice I say work LOL) to change my thinking from negative to positive, I feel entirely different. Does it ultimately defeat burnout? Absolutely not; however, it does lift my mood.

Commit to leaving work AT work

Work always seems to trickle into our time at home, doesn’t it?! This might be hard, but commit that when you walk out the door (or close your laptop at home!), that you are done for the day. We may feel like work won't get done, but if we are well-rested and motivated, we will get way more work done than if we are burnt out!
